Frequently Asked Questions

All the answers to your popular questions!
  • Can I change the colour of my leather or vinyl?

Yes you can but it is recommended that you change to a darker shade due to the coverage but if you wanted to change lighter than the original colour then please just be aware that it may take more coats to cover, how many more coats depends on the original colour and the colour you wish to change to.

  • Do I need to apply a sealant/finish to the leather or vinyl once the colour has been applied and dried?

Yes. The colourant has to be sealed in once fully dried with leather finish, this will make the area tough to wear, scratches and will also waterproof the area.

  • Should I use leather prep to remove the manufacturers finish on my leather/vinyl before applying a colour?

Yes. We recommended that you use leather prep prior to applying the colourant as the manufacturers coating can cause adhesion problems at later stages or even after completion, this process is essential for any restoration or recolour.

  • Is the colour permanent and will it not come off on to clothes or if wiped?

Yes, the colour is permanent and will not come off as long as all steps are followed and colour is sealed in with leather finish (sealant) once colour has dried.

  • My leather is peeling what do I do?

Quite often it is the finish/coating on the leather that is peeling not the actual leather if this is the case then you need to remove the peeling finish with leather prep until completely removed then re-apply colour and finish.

  • Can I use soap and water to clean my leather?

Leather should not be cleaned with soap and water as this tends to dry and shrink the leather. It is always best to use purpose built leather cleaning products.

  • Do conditioners work?

Yes, conditioners are very important for maintaining leather.  Constant creasing and twisting of the leather finish (e.g. after a few months’ use and beyond), will cause micro cracks to form in the finish and a good conditioner will penetrate these and stop them turning into visible creases/cracks.

  • What does finish/sealant add to my recently restored or recoloured leather or vinyl?

Our range of sealants provide a final protection and enhance the finish on your newly coloured leather. The final look can be chosen from matt, gloss or satin.

  • Can I repair a hole, burn, scuff, scratch, rip, or cracking in my leather or vinyl?

Yes you can, we have a leather heavy filler which will repair all damage to your leather and vinyl items.
